Brabantse Wal …where Brabant meets Zeeland…
The Brabantse Wal (Brabant Ridge) is situated on the brink of the Dutch provinces of Noord-Brabant and Zeeland. It’s one of the three Alluring Landscapes in Noord-Brabant. This is an area where natural beauty, heritage sites and cultural events are closely knit.
The Brabantse Wal is a sandy ridge in the far west of the Province of Noord- Brabant that stretches from the Belgian border in the south to the town of Steenbergen in the north and Wouwse Plantage in the east. The area’s most striking feature is the vast diversity of its scenery. The gentle rolling hills of the Brabant Ridge reach over 20 metres above sea level near Woensdrecht and then suddenly drop to the vast polders around Steenbergen, the waterways of Zeeland’s delta and woodlands in Wouwse Plantage. It is a beautiful area, rich in contrasts; an area where you will find woods, rolling pastures, flat polders and ponds. The ridge, which is a landmark of geographic significance, is a challenge for cyclists and walkers because of its varying elevations. The charming villages and the historic city of Bergen op Zoom are well worth a visit.

Pleasant Bergen op Zoom
Bergen op Zoom offers culture, shopping, and culinary enjoyment in a historic setting. It is a city with over 800 years of history: it is a living monument. Experience the eventful past in Het Markiezenhof, the former residence of the lords and marquises. Over 800 historic buildings can be found in the city centre, a number of these are open to the public. The city is surrounded by parks, woods, heathlands and a large recreational lake. Bergen op Zoom is a lovely place in which to stay.

The waterways of Steenbergen
This former fortified city has a great deal to offer water sports enthusiasts. The well-equipped marinas are easy to get to from neighbouring Zeeland and Zuid-Holland. The idyllic Benedensas lock complex, which provides access from the Volkerak to the Steenbergsche Vliet river is unique. There is also plenty to do for cyclists: narrow polder roads, winding dikes and special places to dismount and take a break. The Dintelse Gorzen nature areas are highly recommended for walkers. Walking across the former tidal areas is quite an experience.

Cycling in Woensdrecht
The striking ridge in De Brabantse Wal is most clearly visible in the Municipality of Woensdrecht. The villages of Woensdrecht and Ossendrecht tower above the area, in some places by over 20 metres! The hills, woods and polders are a true paradise for cyclists and walkers. There is also plenty to see and do for nature lovers at the Grenspark Kalmthoutse Heide. For active holiday makers and for those who are looking for peace and quiet, Woensdrecht has something for everyone.

In the liberators’ footsteps
In this region you can discover and experience the route that the allied forces took during the final stages of the Second World War.
